About Joei
Houston-based jewelry designer Joei's artistic credo resonates in each of her unique creations: jewelry is powerful, altering moods, evoking emotions, and instigating reactions."Every time I wear a piece of my jewelry, I expect to get a reaction, and I do. To me, the right jewelry puts the finishing touch on any outfit. Jewelry completes the ultimate ensemble."
Joei's mother and her very own closet inspire her. Growing up with a mother who was a model, Joei was exposed to fashion constantly.
"My favorite way to design a ring, necklace, or bracelet is by pulling something from my collection of clothing and shaping the perfect piece to match. As a result of this procedure, people now bring their clothes to my studio in order for me to design the perfect piece. From there, these pieces evolve and split into other designs."
Born in Utah and moving ten times before she was twenty, Joei learned to adapt to many different environments, leaving her with the urge to travel and experience fashion in many different places. Upon high school graduation, Joei jetted off to New York where she received a Bachelor of Science in Physiology. Tired of the frigid weather, she switched coasts to pursue her Master's in Biomechanics at San Diego State University. In 2000, she succumbed to her desire to seek a career in the arts and launched her line of contemporary jewelry in Houston, Texas.
"Finally, my search was over, and I went back to what I wanted to do when I was three years old: play in my grandma's jewelry box. I wanted to play with jewelry all day long and now I do."
Today, Joei attends the Glassell School of Art to increase her knowledge of working in different mediums. Her designs can be seen on her online store www.joei.net as well as several specialty boutiques in Houston.
